Senior Project Interview

Person Interviewed: Officer Rodriguez of the Topanga Patrol Division

Q: California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country do you think this is good or bad?
A: I think this is great as unlike many states California has many guns on the street. Even my I have to go threw through the same background checks that everyone has to go through to buy firearms.

Q: Do you think California should issue more or less CCW’s (Concealed Weapons Permit allows the permit holder to carry a loaded handgun concealed on them) to private citizens?
A: I think that they should issue the same amount of CCW’s but the background checks should be more enforced and a thorough investigation and more questions should be answered before an applicant is considered for one.

Q: Other than your LAPD issue firearms how many guns do you own?
A: I own four firearms other than the one I wear on my hip. They are all used for recreational target shooting.

Q: Do you think the penalty for felons caught with firearms should be more severe?
A:  Definitely the time in prison should be more severe especially if the previous sentence was for a weapons offense. But I think it should stay the same if the felon’s first offense was non-weapons related,

Q: Do you think California’s lawmakers will pass even more gun control laws?
A: I think they should, and everyone will probably have to meet more requirements and background checks, but right now the state of California is focused on other issues such as the economy and the budget crisis.

Q: Do you think California’s gun laws interfere with the second amendment?
A: Yes I believe it does as there is a bunch of different laws but I think that there is requirements citizens must meet to bear arms. If they become felons they lose the right to posses them,

Q: Do you think that it is just a coincidence that opening up a shooting range or gun store in California is almost impossible?
A: I don’t feel that there are enough out there for us. I would be able to practice more with my weapons.
